Florida House Results 2026: Democrats Break the Republican Supermajority
Sixteen flips, one recount, and a Republican caucus that can no longer put constitutional amendments on the ballot by itself.
For four years Republicans ran the Florida Legislature with votes to spare. After Tuesday, the Florida House supermajority is gone. On unofficial returns Republicans hold 70 seats, Democrats hold 49, and one race is headed to a recount with the Democrat in front.
Why the number 72 matters
Florida's constitution requires a three-fifths vote of each chamber, 72 of 120 in the House, for the Legislature to send a constitutional amendment to voters. Republicans now sit below that line. If they want to change the constitution, they need Democratic votes. That is real leverage, and it starts in January.
They also lost the two-thirds supermajority in both chambers, which has let leadership move fast and ignore the minority on procedure.
Every seat Democrats flipped
Democrats took 16 seats from Republicans, many of them defeating sitting incumbents:
- Central Florida and beyond: HD-35, HD-36, HD-37, HD-38, HD-39 and HD-47 in the Orlando region, plus HD-51 and HD-64.
- North Central Florida: HD-22, where Amy Trask beat Rep. Chad Johnson.
- Tampa Bay: HD-69, where Ashley Herrmann beat Rep. Danny Alvarez.
- Palm Beach County: HD-93, where August Mangeney beat Rep. Anne Gerwig, and HD-94, where Elizabeth Holmes beat Rep. Meg Weinberger.
- Broward: HD-100, won by Michael Ferguson, and HD-101, where Todd Delmay beat Rep. Hillary Cassel.
- Miami-Dade: HD-106, where Lucia Baez-Geller beat Rep. Fabian Basabe, and HD-113, won by Gloria Romero Roses.
Democrats lost one seat. In HD-87 in Palm Beach County, Republican Jon Maples defeated Rep. Emily Gregory, who had flipped the seat in a special election earlier this year. That is the first seat on our 2028 list.
The HD-33 recount
In Brevard County, Democrat Dan McDow pulled ahead of Republican Rep. Monique Miller after late mail ballots were counted. His lead was 274 votes, about 0.38 points, inside Florida's 0.5 point automatic recount threshold. Republicans won this seat by double digits in each of the last two elections. If McDow holds, Democrats reach 50 seats.
The Senate moved too
Democrat John Lowndes unseated Sen. Jason Brodeur in SD-10. Two more Republican-held Senate seats were still being counted at last report. Even if Republicans win both, they fall well short of two-thirds.
South Florida's unfinished business
Not every South Florida seat got a fight. Republicans in HD-110, HD-111, HD-112, HD-114 and HD-120 had no Democratic opponent at all. A seat nobody contests is a seat we lose before a single vote is cast. All 120 House seats are up again in 2028.
